"Bee products" gets used as a catch-all term, which is a little unfair — honey, propolis, pollen and royal jelly come from completely different parts of hive life, and each one does something distinct. If you've ever stood in front of a shelf unsure which to pick, here's the actual breakdown.
Honey: the energy source
Made from flower nectar that bees process and concentrate, honey is primarily a natural source of quick-digesting carbohydrates, along with small amounts of antioxidants and trace enzymes. It's the most familiar of the four, and the one most people already use — as a natural sweetener, or stirred into tea.
Propolis: the hive's defence system
Propolis isn't made from nectar at all — it's tree resin the bees collect and modify with their own enzymes, then use to seal and sterilise the hive itself. This protective origin is exactly why it's the one most associated with immune support as a supplement; it's essentially doing for your body what it already does for the colony.
Bee pollen: the nutrient-dense one
Collected from flowers and packed by worker bees, pollen is often described as nutritionally dense — containing a broad mix of proteins, vitamins and trace minerals. It's the one most commonly associated with general daily vitality rather than one specific function.
Royal jelly: reserved for the queen
This is the most exclusive of the four. Royal jelly is a special secretion worker bees produce and feed only to the queen bee and the youngest larvae — it's what turns an ordinary bee egg into a queen. That exclusivity is part of why it commands more interest as a supplement: nutritionally, it's a notably different substance from standard worker-bee food.
Can you take more than one?
